N.E. ARTISTS GUILD CONFERENCE
I was so blessed to attend this conference.
I have been a voice student (by telephone) of Dr. Scott Martin, who is one of the best in the business, for the past 6 years.
I went to the conference primarily to attend Dr. Martin's seminar.
The conference was sponsored by the Northeast Artist's Guild, (www.northeastartistsguild.com)and was held in Marlton, NJ.
This was the fifth annual event. I am surprised it was not more highly attended.
The conference began on Friday, April 1, and featured opportunities for worship bands, soloists, and groups to compete, and receive critique. A Sara Groves concert was also offered in the evening.
Saturday was mostly comprised of two blocks of seminars. The topics included Guitar, Worship, Sound Engineering, Legal issues, Song Writing, and Vocal.
Lunch was offered at a reasonable fee. A Phil Keagy concert was also offered in the evening for an additional fee.
In addition to the seminars, there were vendors from the Christian music industry, and opportunities for informal networking. For me it was a great opportunity to study with Dr. Martin in person. He taught us that it is our responsibility as Christian artists, whether in churches or elsewhere, to take our abilities to the highest level of excellence we can. He spent the bulk of the time giving practical training in vocal techniques. He called participants out of the audience to work with them individually. It was so great to see people learn and their learning inspired my own learning!
I have been singing for many years now, and primarily am singing in worship setting. I also sing in coffeehouses, other church settings, and outdoor events.
It is easy to compare myself to others who may seem "more important" in how God is using them.
However, I know the Lord has given me talent, and as Dr. Martin reminded me, I need to take it to the highest level of excellence I can!
Would it not be sad if we did not have excellence in our church settings, but only for those who travel on stages??
I would encourage you to check out the Northeast Artists Guild conference for 2006. It is scheduled for April.
